A man of one piece, fond of discipline. He played tennis until he was 82. “He always looked ten years younger than his age,” says son Filip (58). Jan Pellens, who died on April 26, preferred to stay out of the spotlight. Hard work: that’s what it was all about. He made Hessenatie a giant in the maritime world. His idea for a container terminal on the Scheldt proved to be of gold value for the port of Antwerp. Some thought he was a sphinx. “But he was a good-hearted man,” said friend Robert Restiau. “He got his dogs from the shelter, often eight or nine years old.”
