Where does Israel get its weapons?

Although itself a major arms exporter, Israel is also highly dependent on foreign countries for its air force, missiles and guided bombs.

Last Friday one UN Human Rights Council arms embargo on Israel voted down. There were 28 countries in favor, six against and 13 abstentions. The US and Germany, among others, were against. They are responsible for the majority of the weapons supplied to Israel.

BBC made a list of the largest arms suppliers, based on a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI):

1. United States

69 percent of all Israeli (conventional) arms imports between 2019 and 2023 came from the US.

Every year the US supports Israel with $3.8 billion (about 3.5 billion euros) so that it can maintain military dominance in the region.

According to American media, President Joe Biden’s government has concluded around 100 arms deals with Israel since the outbreak of the war. This was done quietly and without the American parliament having to be officially informed because they all fell below the amount above which this is required.

2. Germany

Germany accounted for 30 percent of arms deliveries between 2019 and 2023according to SIPRI.

European countries jointly made 326.5 million euros worth of arms deliveries to Israel. The majority were approved after Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel on October 7 last year. That amount is a tenfold increase compared to 2022.

According to Germany, that amount includes 306.4 million euros in military equipment and 20.1 million euros in war weapons.

3. Italy
Italy comes in third, after a large gap with the US and Germany, with 0.9 percent. They mainly supplied helicopters and naval artillery. Last year, the value of deliveries rose to 13.7 million euros, according to the national statistics agency Altreconomia.

Britain supplied weapons worth 53 million dollars, Canada for $15.7 million.
