FC Utrecht still distanced itself from PEC Zwolle on Wednesday evening after a difficult first half. Trainer Ron Jans made three substitutions at halftime and these turned out to be golden inspirations in Galgenwaard Stadium.

Jans did not seem satisfied with the first half and brought three freshmen with Mark van der Maarel, Oscar Fraulo and Isac Lidberg. That resulted in two goals within five minutes. Van der Maarel and Lidberg played a leading role in the 1-0 against PEC. From a cross from the back, Lidberg headed it onto the post, and Sam Lammers then finished it from close range. A few minutes later, Jens Toornstra fired in the 2-0.

Shortly after trainer Johnny Jansen had injected some extra punch with Mohamed Oukhattou, Utrecht decided the match. Fraulo reached teammate Lidberg in style fifteen minutes before the end and the substitute Swede now shot sharply. A few minutes later the striker also scored, after a failed shot by Jensen he found the right corner for the 4-1. It even became 5-1 thanks to – how could it be otherwise – a substitute. Adrian Blake scored his very first goal at the highest level on a pass from Fraulo.

Utrecht thus passes Sparta again in the rankings, the club is one point behind number seven Go Ahead Eagles. PEC remains six points above the relegation zone. Next weekend Utrecht will play against SC Heerenveen, PEC will meet Excelsior.
