Five thousand children evacuated from Russian border region after Ukrainian attacks

In the Russian region of Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, five thousand children have been evacuated after weeks of Ukrainian bombardment. The governor of the region reported this on Saturday.

Regional authorities announced last week that 9,000 minors would be transferred to other regions after a series of bombings and drone strikes killed more than a dozen people.
“Five thousand of our children are already outside the region. Yesterday (Friday, ed.) 1,300 children have arrived in Saint Petersburg, Bryansk and Makhachkala,” Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said. The children who remain in the region and who live in municipalities close to the border, including Belgorod, will be homeschooled in the coming months, the governor added .

Businesses that had to close as a result of the attacks can reopen provided that “staff are trained in first aid” and that adhesive tape is placed on the windows, it added.

Belgorod has been regularly targeted by Ukrainian airstrikes since the Russian invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago. On Friday, a Ukrainian drone crashed into a multi-storey building in the city. One man was killed and two others were injured.
