The Koksijde hotel school Ter Duinen traveled to Antwerp with a number of students for the national championship ‘Best Junior Sommelier’ and ‘Best Commis Junior Sommelier’ 2024. Four students won prizes.

The competition is organized by the Belgian Sommeliers Guild and is aimed at students in the 6th and 7th year specializing in beverage knowledge from hotel schools and training institutes in Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels. The aim of the competition is to arouse the interest of young future professionals in the hotel, restaurant and sommelier industries by pitting them against each other in a theoretical and practical test.

The students receive an extensive theoretical test that assesses general wine knowledge. The practical test consisted of three parts: correctly pouring a Duvel, decanting wine and tasting various wines. Of the 18 participants, 4 students from the hotel school emerged as winners. The first prize for best ‘Commis Junior Sommelier 2024’ in the 6th year went to Annabel De Vos, the second prize went to Loewie Vanslembrouck. The first prize for best ‘Sommelier Junior 2024’ in the 7th year went to Arthur Vanderlinden and the second prize went to Vince Vanderhaeghe. (Daron Mertens)
