22 students from ROC Nijmegen recently participated in the finals of Skills Heroes, the national professional competitions of secondary vocational education. They qualified for the national finals through a qualifying competition. The awards ceremony took place yesterday and Esther and Gondje won two medals for ROC Nijmegen.

1x gold and 1x silver

Esther van Hooren (22, photo above) went home with the gold medal. She can now call herself Dutch Champion Doctor’s Assistant for a year.

Gondje van de Goor (17, photo below) participated in the Dutch Painting Championship. She won a silver medal. The other 20 students from ROC Nijmegen automatically belong to the best eight in the Netherlands in their field by reaching the final.

Pride, joy and also a little relief

That’s what the students feel. Because participating in Skills Heroes is quite an experience. First, the students have a preliminary round at school or are asked by a teacher. They then compete against students from other schools in a qualifying competition. And if they are among the best eight, they can proceed to the national finals. Most of the final matches were held on March 21 and 22 in the Brabanthallen in Den Bosch. From painter to doctor’s assistant and from construction carpenter to beautician; No fewer than 59 professional competitions took place simultaneously in the large event location with more than 600 participants and many more visitors. An exciting, but above all cool and unique experience for the students.
