According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is working on AI chips to be used in its own data centers. The chips would be used to run AI models, but not to train the models.

The project would be called Internet Project ACDC, short for Apple Chips in Data Center, writes The Wall Street Journal. Apple has been working on the chips for years and would collaborate with TSMC for the design and production of the chips. The sources indicate that it is not clear whether Apple wants to use the chips permanently and whether they will ever be shown publicly.

It doesn’t appear that Apple wants to sell the chips themselves, but instead wants to use them to run AI models itself. The chips would not be intended for training AI models, for which Nvidia’s data center chips are now mainly used. There have been rumors for some time about the use of AI services on Apple products, but Apple would prefer to run those services locally on the user’s device as much as possible. Apple might therefore want to use its own chips for cloud AI services, instead of products from competitors.
