I have never heard or seen that strange controller as a common reason, and as for third party support: that was absolutely not due to the fact that Nintendo itself released few games, because more space is better. for competitive titles, so that’s also highly unlikely.
In fact, the Wii U’s failure was mainly due to extremely poor and unclear marketing. It took far too long for the average consumer to finally understand what the Wii U actually was.
An acquaintance of mine who worked at GameMania at the time had one of the best examples of this: in the early years of the release of the Wii U, he had quite a few people in his store who came to him asking about that “tablet ” or “tablet controller” for the Wii, so apparently those people thought that the GamePad itself was the Wii U and that it was simply an add-on to the existing Wii, rather than a controller of a completely new console.
