Apple is targeting former Google employees to strengthen its artificial intelligence (AI) team. The business newspaper Financial Times reports this based on its own research. Most of these AI newcomers will work at Apple’s offices in California and Seattle, as well as at Apple’s European laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland.

The British newspaper’s analysis of hundreds of LinkedIn profiles, public job postings and research papers shows that the Cupertino company has been on a recruitment drive in recent years to expand its global AI and Machine Learning team. Since John Giannandrea, himself ex-Google, took charge of the AI team in 2018, the iPhone maker is said to have attracted at least 36 specialists from rival Google.

Over the past decade, Apple has also acquired about 20 AI startups. The founders of Musicmetric, Emotient, Silk Labs, CamerAI and AI Music, among others, are still employed at Apple, according to their LinkedIn profiles.
