Popular chat program Discord is giving game companies the opportunity to show advertisements starting this week.

After long being opposed to ads, Discord will start this week with so-called ‘Sponsored Quests’. These are ads that give PC gamers the chance to win in-game rewards if they get friends to watch a stream of them playing that game.

Discord is a chat and calling program that is especially popular among gamers. The idea behind the advertisements is to make games more widely known. “We will get you to players, and those players will introduce you to their friend group,” is the slogan with which Discord promotes the system to advertisers.

First step

The ads were first tested in March and (depending on your friend group, of course) seem fairly subtle for now. Users can also turn them off after approval, although it is not clear whether that will remain the case.

It is true that Discord has long seen its ad-free status as one of its unique selling points. You can use the service for free, or pay for temporary ‘perks’. However, the company has been trying to find new business models and revenue sources for some time now. For example, two years ago, Discord launched an online store for video games, which, however, did not last long.
