Where are the new iPads? This is the expected date

Apple could release the first new iPads of 2024 at any time, but what is the most likely release date for these tablets?

It has been the big question among Apple fans for some time: where are the new iPads? Last year no new devices were released – and that was the first time since the release of the tablet. But according to reliable rumors from Apple expert Mark Gurman, among others, things will be different this year: in 2024, almost all iPads will receive an upgrade.

If we can believe the rumors, Apple will release no fewer than four new iPads at the beginning of this year. First: the iPad Pro 2024. It will reportedly come in the same sizes as before – 11 inches and 12.9 inches – but it will have an OLED screen for the first time.

Secondly: the iPad Air 2024. There will again be a 10.9-inch version, but the iPad Air will also have a bigger brother for the first time: a version of no less than 12.9 inches. This means that for the first time you can buy a large iPad without paying the extra price of an iPad Pro.

On March 4, Apple suddenly surprised with the new MacBook Air 2024, and it was expected that the first new iPads would soon follow. But now it’s almost a month later and they are still nowhere to be seen. There was also a rumor earlier that the iPads would be announced on March 26. But you guessed it: that didn’t happen either. So when is the release date of the new iPads?

Several reports indicate that the new iPads will not be available in stores until April. According to Gurman, this is because a new version of iPadOS 17.4, which is being made specifically for these iPads, “won’t be complete until the end of March or maybe even sometime in April.” He writes that it could take “a few weeks” for Apple to complete this process, and that we can expect something “probably deeper into next month.” In other words, sometime in April.

In any case, we don’t expect any more revelations this week. This is due to the Easter weekend – most companies do not make new announcements right before. Neither does Apple: in 2020, Easter took place on Sunday, April 12, and Apple only announced the iPhone SE 2020 the following week.

Looking back at Apple’s iPad announcements in recent years, they always took place on a Monday or Tuesday. There was one exception: in 2020, the iPad Pro was announced on a Wednesday, but that had to do with the pandemic. But relatively major announcements such as a new iPad usually take place on a Tuesday. Mondays are therefore reserved for smaller upgrades, including the not-so-exciting MacBook Air 2024.

To make a long story short: we expect the new iPads to be announced on Tuesday April 2 or Tuesday April 9. In our opinion, the latter has the best chance. By waiting an extra week, Apple has enough time to replenish supplies and finalize the new version of iPadOS 17.4. And of course to celebrate Easter! You can probably order the new iPads the following Friday, and they will be in stores or in your mailbox a week later.
