According to Beerschot, not threats but possible transfer are the cause of Vanhamel’s non-selection

Mike Vanhamel did not get on the team bus to Roeselare this afternoon. The 32-year-old goalkeeper is again the first choice under the bar at Beerschot this season, but he has been receiving threats and curses from supporters for months via social media.

Initially, the news trickled through that he would therefore not play against Club NXT today on his own initiative. In the meantime, Beerschot has made it clear that another club has a concrete interest in Vanhamel and that it was therefore decided this morning in mutual consultation not to include him in the competition core.

Since Vanhamel lost his captaincy and base place last season for extra-sporting reasons, he has been the head of Jut for the supporters of Beerschot. The fact that his replacement Wouter Biebauw made it clear when he left that he only wanted to stay with Beerschot if Mike Vanhamel was to leave, has reinforced that feeling. Vanhamel kept his lips tight, though he was eager to respond himself. However, the club has refused to give him any interviews about the situation. Vanhamel may have played his last game for Beerschot in the meantime. To be continued.
