Charles De Ketelaere can prepare for the final of the Europa League. The Belgian sent Lookman on his way to the opening goal against an easy Marseille. The liberating second goal came shortly after halftime. Mission accomplished for De Ketelaere, who was then allowed to take up position on the bench. This way he could save his strength for the final battle in Dublin on May 22.

Atalanta – Marseille in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: From the first minute, Atalanta grabbed its opponent by the throat. Marseille could not catch their breath at any point, with a strong collective performance the Italians dominated from A to Z.
  • Man of the match: For once, not a player, but a coach. In Bergamo they may almost build a statue for Gian Piero Gasperini. The 66-year-old Italian has been at the helm since 2016 and has completely molded the sub-topper to his will in recent years. A first European final in club history is the icing on the cake.
  • Statistics: Charles De Ketelaere has found his second wind in Italy. With his assist tonight, he has already been decisive 20 times in 44 games this season. National coach Tedesco would like to see it all happen.

Charles De Ketelaere in his element

Atalanta surprisingly defeated superpower Liverpool in the previous round, while Marseille was defeated in the semi-finals.

On the Côte d’Azur the score was 1-1. Did De Ketelaere and co continue towards their first European final or were the French still in the way?

Both teams started the game with an open mind, although Marseille’s took that a bit too literally.

De Ketelaere was the first to sound the attack drum, after 6 minutes the Red Devil already hit the post. The starting signal of a true surprise.

Zappacosta, Scamacca, and again De Ketelaere: they all collided with Marseille goalkeeper Pau Lopez on the way.

After half an hour, the French defense finally cracked: Lookman played one-on-one, his deflected shot fit nicely into the corner. The assist came from a busy De Ketelaere.

Atalanta went into the changing rooms with a deserved lead, the water was on the French lips.

Atalanta shows no mercy

Three minutes into the second half there was suddenly L’OM.

Clauss cleverly spooned Ndiaye through the Italian defense, Atalanta goalie Musso was in no man’s land. The Senegalese striker spotted the empty goal, but weakly lobbed the ball wide.

Not much later, Marseille was dealt a blow. Ruggeri combined nicely with Lookman, the defender smashed the double lead against the ropes.

Gasset’s pawns were spread out against the canvas. At times it was French cheese with holes at the back, substitute Touré completely sank the ship with the 3-0.

Two poor shots between the posts. Poor fare for Marseille, which could never claim a place in the final.

After the final whistle, the Atalanta supporters let off fireworks. They are in for a long party night in Bergamo, the tickets to Dublin can be booked.

The first European final ever is a fact for “La Dea”.

Phase by phase

End

Manzano saves Marseille from its misery, Atalanta will soon play its first ever European final in Dublin. With a dominant performance they easily defeated L’OM. The weak French could not claim a place in the final at any time.

The fireworks are already popping above the Gewiss Stadium, the Italian supporters are in for a long night of celebration.

Touré with Christmas on the cake!

The cup must be emptied to the bottom. The fresh Touré rushes past Balerdi, face to face with Pau Lopez, the young Malian does not fail. Clear figures in Lombardy.

With fireworks on top: Atalanta scores the 3-0 in the end

An extra 4 minutes will be added.

Fini for Marseille?

L’OM’s ship has long since sunk. They can now keep the ball in the team for longer, but the French are of very little use in their own half.

Moumbagna unintentionally knocks down goalkeeper Musso, both men have to recover from the collision. The miracle syringe does its job.

Marseille goalkeeper is put to work again

First French shot between the posts

Musso is also put to work again. Veretout tries with a long free kick, but in the end it is a simple training ball for the Argentinian goalie.

Koopmeiners also wants to be on the scoreboard

Teun Koopmeiners tests Lopez again, the Spaniard is still awake. Those of Atalanta are expressly looking for that third goal, Marseille must suffer the game like a lamb.

Another fifteen minutes to go

Marseille moves forward, the gaps at the back become bigger. The 3-0 seems closer than the 2-1, the French play without confidence.

Meanwhile, goalscorer Lookman leaves. He quickly defeated several defenders tonight.

Aubameyang in the image of their match. The Gabonese braces himself for a free kick in a nice spot, but hits it dry into the wall. Nothing seems to work on this beautiful Thursday evening.
