Controversy on Wednesday evening in the semi-finals of the Champions League between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. The Rekordmeister had completely relinquished a narrow lead in the final phase, but seemed to come alongside in the closing seconds. Matthijs De Ligt had made it 2-2 with an ultimate attempt, but it was missed by referee Marcyniak’s line judge.

In the absolute final phase, Bayern had the ultimate opportunity to make it 2-2. Joshua Kimmich sent a long cross towards the box, where both De Ligt and substitute Thomas Müller were waiting. After a bizarre phase, in which Marcyniak’s line judge had already blown the whistle for offside, the Dutch defender still rammed the ball into the net. The Bayern players in general and Müller in particular were furious, even more so because Real was allowed to continue playing a few minutes earlier, resulting in Joselu’s second goal. The goal of the qualification would turn out to be.

According to De Ligt himself, the line judge apologized afterwards. “If it is offside, it is offside. But the rule says that if it is not clear, you should let play continue. Even I couldn’t tell it was offside. It’s just a big mistake. The line judge said to me: ‘Sorry, I made a mistake’. Yeah, I don’t buy anything with that. I am not the person who blames a defeat on a refereeing error and that Real always has the referees on their side, but tonight that made the difference.”

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel was also still furious at the press conference afterwards. “It is clearly and unquestionably a breach of every rule in modern football. An absolute disaster and a clear violation of the rules of the game. The rule is clear: a phase must be completed. The first error was one by the line judge, the second by the referee. At this stage you can never be sure that it was offside. It’s a really tough decision to flag for offside here and it’s a wrong one. We accept it, but this would not have happened on the other side.”

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti understood the frustration of his German colleague, but also pointed to a goal that was wrongly disallowed earlier in the game, according to the Italian. “The assistant referee raises his flag, the referee whistles and we stop playing. It may not have been offside, but it’s clear he whistled. They complain about that goal, but we can also complain about the other goal that was disallowed. Kimmich just dives on that corner and that should always have been a goal.”

The conscious phase:
