It is not yet Fabio Jakobsen’s Giro d’Italia, but the sprinter from DSM-firmenich PostNL is still very optimistic. “It’s not that I’m very far away,” he said in conversation with De Telegraaf.

On paper, Jakobsen is one of the fastest sprinters at the start of the Tour of Italy, but the 27-year-old Dutchman was not involved in the first stages that ended in a sprint. On Monday he did not get around to sprinting at all, and a day later he was only 22nd. In other words, things are not yet going well at DSM-firmenich PostNL and Jakobsen, but the latter is keeping their spirits up.

“This tough start to the Giro is far from ideal and these two stages were not pure bunch sprints. But this is also part of cycling. It’s not that I’m very far away, but not super close either. It’s a shame that it didn’t work out these two days and I’m disappointed about that. However, I am not one to hang my head.”

And so the fast man is already looking ahead to today’s ride, which will probably end in a clash between the fast men. This time there will be no short climb in the deep finale: the top of the last climb is about twenty kilometers from the finish. “Today is more of a sprint that is tailor-made for me. We are going for it again,” Jakobsen does not hide his ambitions.
