With a grimace on his face and with great reluctance, Jan Vertonghen had to abandon the fight against Union last Sunday. The captain of Anderlecht felt something in his groin after a sprint. At the Extra Time table, his concerned look was particularly noticeable. “It seemed as if he thought: you know what, one more European Championship and we’ll call it a day,” Peter Vandenbempt shares his gut feeling.

On the half hour it was suddenly over for Jan Vertonghen.

The Anderlecht defender wanted to chase the eternally galloping Amoura in his position, but then he felt something in his groin. The doubtful look – and the attempt to play again – were particularly noticeable afterwards.

“Was he thinking about his future at that moment?”, Filip Joos puts it on the table at Extra Time. “After all, what he will do after the European Championship has not yet been decided.”

A feeling that Peter Vandenbempt shares: “It seemed as if he thought: you know what, one more European Championship and we’ll call it a day. But that might just be a snapshot.”

Although expert Wesley Sonck still wants to appease. “It wasn’t a full sprint, so I think it won’t be too bad.”

It didn’t look really good. You could see the concern on his face.

Franky Van der Elst

Not too bad or not. The question arises when Vertonghen will be fit again. “Because it didn’t look really good,” says Franky Van der Elst. “You could see the concern on his face.”

“He has to think about the European Championship, right? That’s human,” thinks Joos. “He will sense that,” Sonck agrees. “He knows his body inside and out.”

Assuming that the European Championship with the Devils will be a success, Joos comes up with a positive note: “Oh, stop with European Championship gold… That’s nice, right?”

Although Vandenbempt thinks that Vertonghen is extremely bored with the timing. “I can imagine that he really wanted to become champion with Anderlecht. That was a while ago for him.”

Let’s wait and see if the medical tests quickly provide clarity.
