The seven remaining players from the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event battled it out on Saturday afternoon. The Dutchman was one of them; he was sixth, not the best position.

The grand final day of the tournament was already underway when the Dutchman had at one point bet all his chips against one of his opponents, the American Rania Nasreddini. The latter had been dealt a 5 of diamonds and a 4 of clubs, Van Luijk a jack of clubs and 10. After the first four cards had been placed on the table, Van Luijk’s opponent had two pairs: fours and fives. Van Luijk himself only had one pair of jacks, and seemed to be losing at that point. Nasreddini then bet all her chips (all-in), and Van Luijk, who had fewer chips in hand than Nasreddini, went along.

But the last card turned – the river – was favorable to the Dutchman. A 10 of diamonds gave him two pair, higher than Nasreddini, and he won the hand. However, he himself did not notice that. So Van Luijk stood up, fully convinced that he had lost, packed his things and said goodbye to his opponents. It was Nasreddini who pointed out to him that he had won. “Oh my god, shit,” the Dutchman then exclaimed, clapping his hand over his mouth. “I’m so sorry. Oh my god. Oh my god. How stupid.” Not long after, Nasreddini was eliminated.

Ultimately, after a poker battle of about six hours, Van Luijk won the win, and with it the pot of 1 million euros. Below are the images of the completely bewildered Dutchman, who… river for a bit had missed.
