A special moment during the quarter-final at the World Snooker Championship between Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stuart Bingham. O’Sullivan refused to pocket a ball after an imperfection in the table gave him an excellent opportunity to make it 7-5. O’Sullivan ultimately lost the match and can forget about an eighth world title for the time being.

With a 6-5 score in O’Sullivan’s favor, the referee had to ‘respot’ (replace) the black ball because it did not remain in the right place due to an unevenness in the table. The black ball rolled a few millimeters from its point, allowing O’Sullivan to pocket the red ball to make it 7-5. However, the Englishman did not want to take advantage of the situation and decided not to pocket the red. “This is one of the most sporting gestures I have ever seen in sport,” commentator Neil Robertson expressed positive surprise at O’Sullivan’s action, which received loud applause from the spectators.

It certainly didn’t bring O’Sullivan any luck, because after Stuart Bingham made 6-6, he eventually had to admit his superior to his compatriot with 13-10. So no eighth world title for O’Sullivan.

Bingham will face Jak Jones (WS-44) for a place in the final. That thirty-year-old Welshman pulled off a 13-9 win against world number two Judd Trump. In the other semi-final, David Gilbert (WS-31), who opened the World Cup with a 10-9 win against defending champion Luca Brecel (WS-4) and defeated Scot Stephen Maguire (WS-28) 13-8 on Wednesday, is in front a place in the last four, opposite Kyren Wilson (WS-12). On Wednesday evening, he defeated four-time world champion John Higgins (WS-13) 13-8.

After the elimination of Higgins and seven-time world champion O’Sullivan, Bingham is the only semi-finalist to have won the World Cup. In 2015 he defeated Shaun Murphy in the final 18-15. Northern Irishman Mark Allen (WS-3), eliminated 13-12 by Higgins in the eighth finals, is certain that he will end the season as number one in the world due to the failure of Trump and O’Sullivan. Luca Brecel will do that as number three, unless Kyren Wilson wins the World Cup.
