Karel Geraerts does not want to talk about his future at Schalke after a conversation with Marc Wilmots: “There are no guarantees for anyone”

Despite a contract that runs until the end of next season, Karel Geraerts (42) does not want to talk about his future with the German second division club Schalke 04.

“There are currently no guarantees for anyone,” he said during the press moment on Thursday. “It is true that I still have a contract for one season after this. But a lot has also happened in the past year. First we must now ensure its conservation and then we must all make a correct analysis.”

Geraerts has only been working at the company since October last year Traditionsverein from Gelsenkirchen, who has been experiencing difficult sporting and financial times for years. Thanks to a series of better results in recent weeks – the last defeat dates back to mid-March – the club seems to be able to maintain itself in the second Bundesliga, but before that even that was not certain. Moreover, Geraerts was already mentioned a few weeks ago as the top candidate to succeed the fired Ronny Deila at Club Brugge after this season. However, Nicky Hayen is currently doing excellently there.

Sports director Marc Wilmots indicated earlier this week that Geraerts had assured him in a conversation that he could still see himself as Schalke’s coach next season. “Yes, I spoke with Marc,” Geraerts said. “But we speak to each other every day, so that is certainly nothing special. As far as I’m concerned, everything is fine.”

Four matchdays before the end of the competition, Schalke 04 is in thirteenth place after a turbulent season, five points above the first relegation place. With eight victories and as many defeats, Geraerts’ balance in Gelsenkirchen is in balance.
