The business organization submits a complaint to the Antwerp ombudsman about the works in Nationalestraat and in the rest of Antwerp. The organization accuses the local government of a lack of communication.

The fact that work will still take place in Nationalestraat after De Lijn’s works came as a bombshell on Tuesday. There would be disruption in this shopping street until June 8. No one appeared to be aware. Not only the traders and residents, but also the Antwerp district council. Antwerp Alderman of Public Domain Erica Caluwaerts (independent) denies that the works are commissioned by the city of Antwerp. Yet the city must have been aware, because this type of work requires all kinds of permits for closing the street and installing signals.

NSZ is therefore submitting an urgent complaint about the work in Nationalestraat, which according to the organization has a negative impact on entrepreneurs and residents.

“Particularly problematic is the statement from Alderman Caluwaerts, which states that this work was not carried out on behalf of the city, while district mayor Paul Cordy (N-VA) confirms that the repairs are indeed taking place at the request of the city,” said the complaint to the ombudsman. “This indicates a serious internal communication gap and lack of coordination within the city government.”

NSZ requests a formal investigation into the organization and planning of these works and into the communication procedures. (svw)
