Many more prizes will be awarded at club level in the coming weeks, but after that all eyes will quickly turn to the European Championship. On May 28, Domenico Tedesco will announce the 26-man selection of the Red Devils. After practice matches against Montenegro and Luxembourg, they will start their tournament on June 17.

In the group stage, Belgium will initially have to deal with Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine. After that, in principle, a viable card would have to wait in the eighth finals. After all, the Devils should be able to become group winners and in that case they will then meet the number three from group A, B, C or D.

Castagne wants to become European champion

After that it might be a different story. But Timothy Castagne is clear about Belgian ambitions in Germany. “The only ambition we can have is to win,” the right back explains Eleven/DAZN. “Third place doesn’t get you much. The goal of a tournament is to win it.”

However, that does not mean that he sees Belgium as the top favorite. “We know it will be very difficult. There are teams that are more favorites than us. But we go there to win. If we go there just to survive the group stage, you will not achieve anything. In a tournament anything can happen. We hope to surprise.”

Red Devils are not top favorites

In principle, Belgium seems to be only an outsider for the tournament win. The absolute top favorites are probably France and England, both of which can draw from a deep pool of talent. Belgium seems to be in the group behind it, with countries such as Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Castagne will mainly hope that he will have a better experience than at the previous European Championship. In 2021, his tournament was over after less than half an hour, because he suffered a serious eye socket fracture early on in the opening match against Russia. In any case, he seems to be assured of a starting place, unless Tedesco surprises and prefers Thomas Meunier.
