Thibau Nys loses leader’s jersey to Ayuso after soaking wet time trial, Van Wilder advances to a good second place | Cycling

--

Thibau Nys (21) was only able to enjoy the yellow leader’s jersey in Romandie for one day. Juan Ayuso takes over after a rained out time trial won by Brandon McNulty. The American was still able to drive in dry conditions and took full advantage of this. Our compatriot Ilan Van Wilder finished ninth and therefore moves up to second place in the rankings.

Today a short but difficult time trial was on the program in the Tour de Romandie. Thibau Nys started with one goal: to keep his leader’s jersey. Early on, a first target time was set by the American time trial champion, Brandon McNulty. A canon time, as it turned out afterwards.

Many riders tried to beat McNulty’s time, but in vain. Felix Grossschartner and Magnus Sheffield were McNulty’s closest attackers. Around the time of the departure of the classification men it started to rain heavily in the start and finish town of Oron and the top time seemed to fly by. It’s up to Nys and Van Wilder to make another attempt to dethrone McNulty.

But the rain turned out to be too much of a spoilsport and none of the classification men came even close to the top time, mainly for fear of jeopardizing their classification. Vlasov and Ayuso made another attempt, but they fell just short. McNulty sat in the hot seat all day and didn’t see anyone improve his time. Ayuso, on the other hand, took the leader’s jersey from Nys, who came in more than a minute and a half from McNulty. Van Wilder is second in the rankings, Vlasov third. Nys limited the damage somewhat and fell back to seventh place.
