No longer entitled to a 15-minute delay: alcohol controls stricter from May 1 | Domestic

If you want to celebrate your day off on May 1, you better be careful. From Wednesday, alcohol checks by the police will become somewhat stricter. Drivers will then no longer be able to request a 15-minute delay before blowing. This would allow the police to carry out more checks at the same time. That’s what ‘De Standaard’ writes.

If you were to pass a police check today and were asked to blow your whistle, you would in principle be entitled to a 15-minute delay. From May 1, this will no longer be allowed: all checks will be carried out immediately.

Originally you were allowed to ask for a fifteen minute delay to stop the ‘mouth alcohol effect’. This means that a driver could have drunk alcohol before getting into the car, which could cause a distorted picture. However, modern devices can measure this distortion perfectly, so that there is no longer a distorted image.

Alcohol checks will also become easier from July 1. The minimum volume of exhaled air will be reduced from 1.9 liters to 1.2 liters. That amount is enough for modern devices. In addition, a police officer will save time, as 1.9 liters proves difficult for some – such as people with breathing difficulties where a doctor has to take a blood sample, which in turn takes longer.

Nothing changes in the alcohol test itself, only the amount. More checks can be done at the same time. No additional investments are required either.

“Making alcohol checks more effective will also contribute to the All For Zero plan’s target of checking 1 in 3 drivers every year,” said spokesperson, Thomas Delchambre, for Federal Minister of Mobility, Georges Gilkinet. “It also complements one of the most important measures in the federal action plan: the lowering of the tolerance threshold for alcohol consumption. Since last year, this has led to the immediate and temporary withdrawal of the driver’s license for an alcohol intake of 1.2 per mille.”
