In the absence of an opponent, Pedro Rocha has been officially appointed as president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). A striking choice, because the interim chairman was charged in a corruption case earlier this month.

Spanish football has been in crisis since last summer after then-president Luis Rubiales’ forced kiss on player Jenni Hermoso after winning the Women’s World Cup final.

Since then, peace has not returned. Last month, a corruption case came to light, in which Rubiales is accused of “money laundering, commercial corruption, maladministration and membership of a criminal organization”.

The investigation focuses on the awarding of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia. Since 2020, the football cup between the numbers 1 and 2 in the competition and the finalists of the Spanish Copa del Rey has been organized in the Middle East.

Pedro Rocha, who took over from Rubiales as interim chairman in August, is also charged in that corruption case. Yet Rocha was the only candidate today appointed as official president of the Spanish Football Federation.

The appointment comes a day after the Spanish government’s decision to place the football association under supervision.

The Supreme Council for Sport (CSD) set up a committee to monitor the federation in the coming months. Spain will organize the Football World Cup in 2030 together with Portugal and Morocco.
