Today is May 7, which is Asthma Day worldwide. That is a day on which the disease is given extra attention.

According to recent figures, Belgium is only in 26th place worldwide when it comes to an action plan against asthma. Our country would not immediately have a well-functioning asthma plan. We visited Professor Guy Brusselle of Ghent University Hospital. He is chairman of the organization that is committed to treating lung diseases. According to the professor, the main focus in Belgium should be on informing, because nowadays asthma can be treated very well.

Guy Brusselle – lung diseases UZ Gent: “The most important thing is that we inform patients and that we also inform all healthcare workers and especially primary care physicians and pharmacists about the new treatments for asthma. And if we focus on mild asthma, people who have infrequent complaints, a puffer used to be used that only opened the airway briefly. But it does nothing about the underlying inflammation and nothing about the underlying allergy. Fortunately, we now have much better medication there, also in the form of an inhaler or puffer.”
