Colin Coosemans was allowed to substitute for RSC Anderlecht on Wednesday evening. It was the first time that he was allowed to play for the Purple & White.

Kasper Schmeichel remained in the dressing room during half-time of the match between RSC Anderlecht and Cercle Brugge on Wednesday, allowing reserve goalkeeper Colin Coosemans to play his first minutes ever for RSC Anderlecht.

Coosemans has been playing for RSC Anderlecht since 2021. Peter Verbeke then took him away from KAA Gent. He had barely been allowed to play six games in three years. He chose Anderlecht, even though there were teams where he could play much more.

“At 28, financial aspects also play a role. What would you choose if you were only going to earn a third or a quarter somewhere? Moreover, the intention was always to play goalkeeper for a top club. Playing is one thing, circumstances are another. And where better to be than at Anderlecht? The setting, the facilities, the atmosphere: all top notch,” says father Philippe to Het Nieuwsblad.

According to father Coosemans, the turning point at KAA Gent was the preliminary round of the Europa League against Jagiellonia in 2018. “It rained heavily in that match and Colin saw the Polish ball spin out of his hands a few times. But, he kept a clean sheet and even got a good ball out, giving them a 0-1 win.”

But not everyone was satisfied with Coosemans. “Despite the zero, some apparently thought he radiated uncertainty. Afterwards it was over. That’s AA Ghent. A lot of good goalkeepers are brought in there, but they don’t get many chances. At a so-called top club you are dismissed more quickly than at KV Mechelen or Beveren.”
