INTERVIEWS The denouement of the competition is approaching and so the pressure on players and coach is increasing. For example, after the match against Genk, Brian Riemer was concerned about the management of the game. Although he doesn’t complain about the pressure. And to de-stress, he also has his habits.

“I don’t want to say anything more about the situation itself, because I already received a warning,” Riemer responded to his press chat when asked about Saturday’s statements. “We lost a match that we would have liked to have won, or at least drawn. At this stage of the competition, everyone, press and supporters, wants emotions and stress. There is plenty of that now, in all matches.”

“It’s not nice to concede a goal in the last minutes. We know we didn’t play our best game. We thought we could get a point out of it, but then it was taken away from us. That of course doesn’t make any difference afterwards. a smile on your face. We all like emotions in football. Sometimes they are good emotions, sometimes bad.”

A journalist asked Riemer if he regretted what he said about the referee an hour after his statements. “I wouldn’t call it regret… I don’t think I was disrespectful. That was certainly never my intention. Sometimes we see things differently. We have to accept that.”

“Do something completely different for a few hours a day”

Clubs play a lot of matches. How difficult is it to disconnect for a while? “Honestly? That’s difficult,” said Riemer. “Especially now when the matches follow each other in close succession. You have to analyze the previous match and prepare the next one. You try to let it go for a while, but a day only has 24 hours. So it’s not that easy.”

How does Riemer relax? “I’m alone here. I try not to come home too late, so that I still have a few hours when I can do something else. For example, cooking or watching a movie. But I try to have a few hours every day when I can do something completely.” It’s good to take some distance sometimes, because that clears your head.”

“This pressure gives us energy”

Riemer and his staff try to ensure that the players also get the necessary space to keep their heads fresh. “Within the club we spend a lot of time in planning, both for players and staff. This is how we want to ensure that everyone is in the best condition to perform. Sometimes ‘less is more’. In fact, we would now be in a should be in a good position. We train and play matches for about a year. Now you don’t have to change much.”

“Pressure is also part of football. If you play for the good places, then this is the nice pressure. In the other play-off groups the pressure is different, but so is what there is to gain. For us this is positive pressure, pressure that gives us energy.”
