Jan Vertonghen briefly lost his cool last weekend against KRC Genk. He delivered a vicious kick to Zakaria El Ouahdi.

It was just before half time that Vertonghen made a nasty mistake on El Ouahdi with a ball that rolled out. He should have been given a yellow card for that, although a red card would also have been possible.

In Extra Time, El Ouahdi was asked whether Vertonghen should have been on the field after halftime after the mistake he made. “Yes, he was still allowed to be on the field,” the Genk resident indicated.

Vertonghen extended his hand while entering, but El Ouahdi did not want to know about that at that moment.

“The fact that Vertonghen was whistled at from the first minute played a role at that moment,” Gunther Schepens saw as a possible reason, also with the uproar with Bonsu Baah from a while ago in mind.

“It was a nasty mistake, wasn’t it,” Gert Verheyen continued. “I’d rather have a hard kick, so to speak, than something like that. So a yellow card would have been appropriate.”

Yet Vertonghen got away without a card. “Was it a factor that he has some dominance among the referees in Belgium, as we have seen before?” Filip Joos wondered.

“Oh well, if he had received a yellow card, he would have just accepted it,” Youri Mulder closed the chapter.
