Antwerp lost 1-0 to Anderlecht on Saturday. One phase in particular attracted attention: the red card that Owen Wijndal received.

As half-time approached, Thorgan Hazard made a mistake trying to get back at Owen Wijndal. The Antwerp player stood up and walked towards the Anderlecht player. As both men stood head to head, the fourth ref intervened.

Thorgan Hazard crashed to the ground. After the referee was called to the VAR screen, he decided to send Wijndal off the field.

At La Tribune, former referee Alexandre Boucaut gave his opinion on this red card. “First of all, there is clearly and obviously a mistake by Thorgan Hazard.”

“Then there is a clear head movement from Wijndal. He hits Hazard, who then makes very good use of his experience and the VAR by falling in a spectacular way and drawing attention to the alleged seriousness of the facts.”

Boucaut is resolute: the images point to a red card. “The referee had no choice but to exclude Wijndal based on the movement of his head. It is a correct red card. Leaving him on the field would not have been acceptable.”
