Vos benefits from ‘mat-Kopecky-af’ tactic Lidl-Trek in Dwars door Vlaanderen, Van Anrooij second

Marianne Vos has won Dwars Door Vlaanderen! The Dutch one from Visma | Lease a Bike benefited from the executioner work of Lidl-Trek with great legs. That succeeded in putting Lotte Kopecky in the corner, but Shirin van Anrooij turned out to be no match for Vos in a sprint-á-deux.

The women’s race was 130 kilometers long, and just like the men’s, it lasted a long time. The battle for the leading group was fierce and due to the high pace the peloton was split in two with one hundred kilometers to go. The damage was repaired towards the foot of the Volkegemberg (the second climb of the day). SD Worx-Protime could often be found at the outposts, but a leading group did not emerge.

When we had completed the passage of Berg ten Houte and Kanarieberg unscathed, Pieterse headed for the Kanarieberg. Demi Vollering and Kopecky responded, and a nice group was created. However, it was suddenly stopped 63 kilometers from the finish. An incident involving two cars in the men’s race forced the organization to stop for a moment and think about the next step.

The climbs of Knokteberg – Trieu and Hotond were canceled and so we started again with only 46 kilometers to go. Lidl-Trek ensured that everything that was still running in front of it was brought back. With that the final could begin. An attack by Lidl-Trek in the wind 33 kilometers from the end resulted in the main selection. Kopecky and Pieterse were there, as were Lidl-Trek duo Elisa Longo Borghini and Shirin van Anrooij, Vos for Visma | Lease a Bike, Emma Norsgaard on behalf of Movistar and Letizia Paternoster.

A beautiful group of six, because Norsgaard had to drop out. Vollering was unable to participate due to a flat tire. It spun around nicely at the front, so the peloton could forget about it. For the final we had to look at Lidl-Trek, which had two ladies and wanted to play out that surplus. Van Anrooij was first at twelve kilometers and strangely enough only Vos responded. Kopecky remained seated and the others looked at the world champion.

The gap between Van Anrooij and Vos quickly rose to twenty seconds and the gap seemed to have been closed when the collaboration behind it got going again. Kopecky took most of the turns, until Longo Borghini suddenly pulled away and tried to cross with Paternoster. However, Kopecky and Pieterse did not drop out, so Longo Borghini suddenly brought the rainbow jersey close to Van Anrooij with her move.

Fortunately for Vos and Van Anrooij, Kopecky was unable to get to the two leaders with a final lunge attempt. It became a sprint, with Vos starting from the front and never getting into trouble for the win. Van Anrooij finished second, with Paternoster sprinting to third place.
