14 months and 5 days. That’s how long Dani Alves spent in jail. The ex-footballer of Barcelona, PSG and Juventus, among others, was sentenced to 4.5 years behind bars in a rape case, but has been free since yesterday. This was preceded by a race against time to pay a deposit of 1 million euros.

Free at a hefty price tag.

Dani Alves was sentenced in February to 4.5 years in prison for the rape of a woman in a Barcelona nightclub in Barcelona in 2022.

The 40-year-old Brazilian appealed against that sentence and remained in custody in the meantime. That for over a year.

Yesterday, Alves left prison in the Catalan capital because he paid a bail of 1 million euros. He can therefore wait in complete freedom for the appeal to be heard.

For the former player of FC Barcelona, among others, finding that sum was a race against time. His own accounts were frozen, so he had to rely on compassionate acquaintances.

First the link was made with the Neymar family, but they no longer wanted anything to do with the matter. Ultimately the amount was transferred. It is not yet entirely clear from what origin.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, the court has confirmed that it is certainly “an ex-La Liga player”.
