The central part of the United States had to deal with dozens of large tornadoes on Friday. There was serious damage and according to emergency services at least three people were injured.

According to the American weather service NWS, more than 70 tornadoes were registered on Friday, mainly in the region around Omaha, the largest city in the state of Nebraska, right on the border with Iowa.

Images of ‘storm chasers’ showing large tornadoes are circulating on social media. Dozens of buildings were destroyed, electrical lines snapped and wagons derailed.

Elkhorn, a suburb of Omaha, has been hit. Images show houses destroyed, roofs blown away and trees uprooted.

Via X, formerly Twitter, the Omaha police announced that emergency services are visiting the affected homes and providing assistance to possible injured people.

Collapsed building

Further south near the city of Lincoln, a tornado struck a warehouse where about 70 employees were present. The building collapsed. Those present were evacuated and three were injured, Lancaster district authorities said during a press conference. The injured are not in life-threatening condition.

The National Weather Service had issued a raft of tornado warnings in the central US states on Friday. The weather phenomenon would continue to occur on Saturday, as far away as Texas. Tornadoes are relatively common in the US, especially in the center and south of the country.
