BeernemA person died in a serious accident on the E40 in Beernem on Thursday morning. The highway to the interior was therefore blocked for hours. The traffic expert of the public prosecutor’s office is investigating, among other things, whether there was excessive speed. For example, witnesses reported that the drivers involved were racing shortly before the accident.

Two cars, a BMW and a Porsche, collided around 9.15 am on the E40 between Beernem and Aalter. The red BMW with British number plate ended up in the ditch due to the impact and was then catapulted back onto the highway. It was immediately clear that the situation was very serious. Emergency services rushed to the scene en masse. The fire brigade of the Emergency Zone 1 was called and the mugheli also landed on the highway.

Seized

There was no help for the 24-year-old driver of the car with a British number plate. “The man, a British man, was thrown from the vehicle and died on the spot,” the federal highway police confirmed. One of the man’s passengers was seriously injured and taken to hospital. The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries. The public prosecutor’s office sent a traffic expert to the scene to investigate the circumstances of the accident.”

Several witnesses reported that the drivers involved were racing shortly before the accident. The federal road police and the public prosecutor’s office cannot confirm this for the time being. “The vehicles have been seized to allow the expert to further investigate the speed,” says prosecutor Frank Demeester.

Due to the accident, the E40 inland direction was completely closed for hours. Traffic had to leave the highway in Oostkamp. That caused a long queue. Drivers had to line up from before Bruges. Those who had to go to Antwerp were advised to drive via the A11/E34. Traffic in the direction of Ghent should take the E403 towards Kortrijk or the A11/E403. The roadway was reopened just before 1 p.m.
