With the Google Pixel 8a, the technology giant presents a budget-friendly smartphone that will receive new software for an exceptionally long time. What else does the phone offer for the cost of 549 euros? We list it for you.

During the presentation of the Google Pixel 8a to the press before the actual announcement, we noticed that the differences with last year’s more expensive models are small.

Long software support

The Pixel 8a will also receive new versions of Android for seven years and security updates will also be provided during that period. That is exceptional for a phone in this price range.

The Samsung Galaxy A55, for example, appeared in stores in March for 479 euros, but will receive four Android updates and five years of security updates.

Similarities with Pixel 8

On paper, this new Pixel 8a is very similar to the Pixel 8 from the end of last year, despite the price difference of 250 euros. The processors are exactly the same and you get the same amount of storage and RAM.

In fact, the screen of the new budget phone is almost identical. Here too, there is now a super high refresh rate of 120 Hertz. In human language: animations flow quickly across the screen. In addition, the peak brightness has been increased, which, according to Google, should make it perfectly possible to read everything in sunlight.

Almost all of Google’s AI gadgets

It wouldn’t be a Pixel if the phone wasn’t packed with artificial intelligence from Google.

If you’ve taken a few group photos one after the other and none of them have the best facial expressions on all the people, you can easily switch them up.

You can also change the position or size of certain people or objects. You can delete disturbing sounds from videos. Consider wind and other background noises.

What you won’t be able to use with the Pixel 8a is the ‘Video Boost’. This allows you to have videos processed on Google computers, which should make them look better. For example, night videos should look brighter. That function remains exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro, with a suggested retail price of 1,099 euros.

At HLN we will be working with the new Google Pixel 8a from today. Do you have questions about this smartphone? Post them below and you might read an answer on our site soon.
