After years of rumors: Nintendo finally confirms successor to the Switch | Games

--

UPDATEThe extremely popular Nintendo Switch may get a successor. The Japanese gaming group promises to make an announcement in the current financial year (April to March, ed.) about the long-awaited successor to the popular game console, CEO Shuntaro Furukawa said on X, the former Twitter.

Last March, the Switch celebrated its seventh anniversary. Since its launch, the console has been sold more than 141.3 million times.

Bloomberg news agency reported in February, based on anonymous sources, that Nintendo had told its suppliers and partners that it would postpone the launch of a new console until March 2025 or later. The initial intention was to launch a successor this year.

In June, the Kyoto gaming group will organize a Nintendo Direct event, at which it will reveal which games it is working on. Furukawa emphasizes that the long-awaited Switch successor will not be discussed there.

The Nintendo CEO’s announcement came on the margins of the group’s annual results. The company saw turnover increase by 4.4 percent to 1.67 billion yen (about 10.1 billion euros) and operating profit by 4.9 percent to 529 billion yen (3.2 billion euros). It sold fewer Switch consoles in its broken financial year with 15.7 million units (-12.6 percent) and also fewer games with 199.7 million copies (-6.7 percent).

For the current financial year, Nintendo predicts significantly lower turnover and operating profit of 1.35 billion (8 million euros) and 400 billion yen (about 2.4 billion euros) respectively. Switch sales are expected to fall to around 13.5 million and with 165 million copies, the Japanese also expect to sell significantly fewer games.

The company owes the green figures to the enormous success of the film ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’. As a result, revenues from media featuring Nintendo characters and mobile games increased by 81.6 percent to 92.7 billion yen (about 5.7 billion euros).
