It is known that Erik Van Looy is a passionate Antwerp fan. But we don’t immediately expect from the ever peace-loving director that he ever got into a fight with a football hooligan. And yet it is so. “What I immediately thought of: The smartest person is busy, he should not hit my face,” said Van Looy about the bizarre event.

“Some of my friends from the past were hooligans,” Van Looy begins his story The Weekwatchers on Radio 2. He says he avoids any form of violence. “I am so against violence. I can’t imagine succeeding anyone,” says Erik. Let alone that he would get into trouble with a hooligan. Until that one time.

Precisely while experiencing one of his great passions, a hooligan suddenly rushes towards him and issues the following unmistakable threat: “I’m going to punch you in the mouth.”

“Yes, then you know that a fight is coming,” Erik says to host Ruben Van Gucht. “I tried to walk, but stood in front of a closed gate. What I immediately thought of: man, The smartest person is busy, he should not hit my face.”

And what do you do in such a precarious situation? That’s right, lie down on the floor. And so it happened. “And then he stomped again and then he stopped,” Van Looy continues. “Because he probably thought: this is not a fight.”
