Vincent Kompany and Burnley keep Manchester United in check and take a well-deserved point in the battle for retention in the Premier League

For a long time it looked like Vincent Kompany was going to score a much-needed point at Old Trafford, but after 79 minutes Man United still took the lead. After a costly mistake by Sander Berge (ex-Genk), Antony was able to reach goal alone. The Brazilian rushed towards goalkeeper Muric and made it 1-0 with a low slider.

A big blow for Burnley, which was certainly not the lesser team until then. But in the final phase, the Clarets were suddenly awarded a penalty after Man U goalie Onana was late with his intervention. Zeki Amdouni took charge of the eleven meter and did not fail: 1-1.

In injury time, Burnley came close to scoring the winning goal, but Onana parried Wilson Odobert’s shot. No victory, but a deserved point for Vincent Kompany’s men, who kept Mike Tresor and Manuel Benson on the bench for the entire match. Ameen Al-Dakhil is still injured.

The draw means Burnley has been unbeaten in the Premier League for three games in a row. It remains penultimate, but is within two points of Nottingham Forest, which is in a safe seventeenth place and will play against Manchester City on Sunday.

Man United remains in the doldrums again. With two wins, four draws and three defeats in nine games, they are going through a miserable period. The Mancunians are in sixth place with 54 points and feel the hot breath of Newcastle on their neck.

Sheffield certain of relegation

At the same time, Newcastle sealed the fate of red lantern Sheffield United. The Blades were sent home with a heavy 5-1 score and are therefore mathematically certain of relegation. Ahmedhodzic gave the visitors hope with the early 0-1, but Alexander Isak quickly put things in order.

In the second half, Newcastle stepped up a gear, which ultimately resulted in a 5-1 final score. Sheffield is disconsolately last with 16 points and can no longer maneuver itself to a safe place.

Luton loses

Luton, with Thomas Kaminski and Albert Sambi Lokonga in the starting line-up, lost 2-1 at Wolverhampton. Hwang Hee-chan and Tote Gomes doubled the lead for the home team.

Carlton Morris scored the tying goal, but in the end there was no more to it. Vincent Kompany will have liked it, because Luton is just above Burnley and has one point more than the Clarets. Wolverhampton is in the safe middle bracket in tenth place.

Everton assured of retention

Everton recorded an economical 1-0 win against Brentford. Idrissa Gueye scored the only goal of the game on the hour mark. Amadou Onana was allowed to help defend the lead in the 78th minute.

The Toffees (36 points) jump to fifteenth place in the Premier League after the victory over Brentford (35). With three games left to play, they are mathematically certain of retention.

Assist Castagne

Fulham and Crystal Palace had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Rodrigo Muniz gave the home team the lead seven minutes after halftime. Timothy Castagne provided the excellent assist for the opening goal.

Jeffrey Schlupp brought Palace level in the final phase with a wonderful goal. Fulham is thirteenth in the standings with 43 points, Crystal Palace follows in fourteenth place and has three points less.
