The Red Devils took a 2-2 draw against England. Although we got away very well a few times.

A draw against England, in preparation for the European Championship it is certainly not a bad result, but there were still shivers at the back. The defense of the Red Devils remains the major concern.

And that 2-2, it could also have been a big defeat if the English had taken their chances. But they did not do that, although things regularly went well for the troops of national coach Domenico Tedesco, as analyst Marc Degryse saw.

“The defense held up pretty well anyway,” says Degryse in Het Laatste Nieuws. “They were certainly not inferior to England’s defense.”

Debast or Faes at the back?

The first tricky moment was the penalty phase. “Vertonghen may have been a bit surprised in the back at the 1-1, but I am not so sure whether he actually made a penalty foul on Toney.”

And then there was also the choice to place Debast at the back. “Debast escaped when he almost scored an own goal, but he still stood his ground. Okay, he didn’t dominate in the aerial duels, but Toney is a really strong striker – he impressed more than Watkins against Brazil – and I think Faes would have the same problems with him.”
