He was one of the most important managers in America, but after his feud with Taylor Swift, Scooter Braun is for many persona non grata. Their protracted conflict has been made into a documentary.

The two-part documentary Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun: bad blood premieres next month on streaming service Paramount+. The makers deliberately chose two episodes so that they can reconstruct the story in each part from the point of view of both parties.

That story begins when Braun sold the rights to Taylor Swift’s first six albums to an investment fund for $300 million in 2019. He acquired those rights after taking over her record label Big Machine. Swift couldn’t laugh about it and said that the sale was part of a years-long feud with Braun in which he constantly harassed her. Their relationship was already clouded at that point. “This is just wrong. He now suddenly has control over songs I collaborated on. He was not an involved party in any way,” she said at the time.

Public quarrel

The documentary first discusses Swift’s point of view. She says she had no say in the acquisition of the rights to the master tapes and that she was never entitled to buy back her own music. In the sequel, Braun says that Swift was not open to negotiation and mainly wanted to play out their argument in public. Many legal experts and insiders are being brought forward because this is a complicated issue.

However, the conflict meant that Braun was no longer wanted as a manager of stars such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato. They sided with Swift. As is known, Swift re-recorded the first albums of her career. She thus became the owner of those versions again.
