Eric Corton’s hearing is no longer what it used to be. The 55-year-old radio DJ wrote this on Instagram. “After more than thirty years of working in live music, I have reached the point where I increasingly ask ‘huh, what?’ have to say.”

“By concentrating enormously, I still get enough of a conversation,” Corton writes. “The TV always has to be a little louder and my iPhone warns me four times a week about the volume of my EarPods.”

But the worst thing for the radio DJ is that he can no longer distinguish main and secondary sounds in “noisy circumstances”, such as at dinners or parties. “That’s exhausting.”

Corton writes that he realizes that he has not been careful with his ears. His band’s rehearsals were always at “full power”, for hours on end. He also made radio for fifteen years with a loud sound through his headphones: “Standje blood from your ear.”

The radio DJ has now had his ears tested. “It turned out that I have 40dB decay on both the left and right. That is basically enough to consider support,” he shares. But he thinks a hearing aid is “quite a step”. “But maybe that won’t be so bad. Luckily I still have all my own teeth.”
