On Thursday, the entire provincial council signed a motion for the preservation of the regional morning programs on Radio 2. This was submitted by all political groups and therefore also supported by the deputation and the governor. The intention is that the latter two will consult with the board of directors and the board of directors of the VRT.

At the end of August, VRT announced that the morning shows ‘Start je Dag’ and ‘Radio 2 West Flanders’ would disappear from the ether from 2023. “It’s about more than just regional news. It is about the identity of 400,000 West Flemish listeners. Local and regional reporting is essential for a public channel,” Els Kindt (CD&V) read from the motion.

The Province strives for the permanent regional content of the morning programs on Radio 2. In addition, the Province wants the reporting via Radio 2 to continue to be organized at provincial level, and that this fact be recorded in the management agreement between the Flemish Government and VRT.

“The reactions have shown that many people still want to hear the news from their region, not look it up via digital channels”

“A lot of people can’t or don’t want to use the digital channels. Of course we don’t want to counter this evolution, but we have to take into account the target groups that still want to hear the news from their own region through the classic channels,” it sounds from the various groups.

The motion was also submitted to the Flemish Government, so we have to wait and see for approval on their side.
