“In Belgium, illegal and forced adoptions have indeed taken place between 1950 and today. There is sufficient evidence for that.” Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) stated this in Parliament on Wednesday. This recognition is a major breakthrough and relief for the victims who previously told their stories in detail in the HLN podcast ‘Children of the Church’. Will they now receive financial compensation? “We hope we get help. The emptiness is great if you know nothing at all about your history,” says Debby Mattys (56).
