“Possibly the busiest evening rush hour of the year”: the long weekend starts and a few accidents cause roads to become silted up

--

It was a busy day on the road, to say the least. No record was broken, but it may well be the busiest evening rush hour of the year. The roads around Antwerp in particular turned deep red for hours.

It is a classic: on the eve of the Ascension weekend there are many traffic jams on the Flemish highways. “People only have to take one day of leave and can take four consecutive days of holiday, which is increasing,” said spokesman Peter Bruyninckx on Wednesday evening when the roads were still overcrowded.

“The figures are impressive, at peak time there was at least 320 km of traffic jams, but we may not break a record. There is a lot of traffic, it is really busy. There have been a few incidents, but not exceptionally many, the traffic jams are entirely due to a huge crowd on the road.”

The traffic jams started in the morning, especially around Antwerp. During the evening rush hour there was also queuing around Brussels and Ghent, with many people driving towards the Belgian coast. At around 8 p.m. there was still about 180 kilometers of traffic jams. “The traffic jams that have built up over the past few hours are very difficult to resolve,” Bruyninckx concluded.

It was extremely busy, especially around Antwerp, until late in the evening. At around 5:50 PM an accident occurred on the Ring towards the Netherlands, near Berchem. Two lanes were blocked there for a long time, but the accident has now been resolved. The worst suffering was suffered around 9 p.m.
