A striking coaching change is taking place in Belgium. RC Genk immediately says goodbye to Wouter Vrancken, who is about to sign a contract with AA Gent.

Vrancken was in his second season at Genk, which missed out on the title in the final minute last year. Thanks to a goal by Toby Alderweireld, Antwerp FC was crowned national champion at the last minute. This season, Genk is once again participating in the championship pool, but first place disappeared from view due to a double defeat against Club Brugge.

In recent days, Vrancken’s name has been singing around Ghent. This appears not to have come out of the blue, as various Belgian media reported know that there is a verbal agreement between both parties on the table. Vrancken would say goodbye to the Genk playing group on Thursday, which does not yet want to respond officially. “For the time being, Vrancken is the club’s trainer,” is the response.

It is not yet known who will be responsible for Genk’s last three matches. The club may be waiting for a tense meeting later this month. The number four in the championship pool, which is currently Genk, will play against the winner of play-off 2. Gent is nine points ahead of closest pursuer KV Mechelen.

If nothing changes in the standings of both groups, Genk and Ghent will decide among themselves who will win a ticket for the play-offs for the Conference League. Vrancken will succeed Hein Vanhaezebrouck in Ghent, who will leave the club next summer after four seasons.
