The F70 bicycle highway connects Bilzen with Hasselt. In recent years, the provincial government, local authorities and Flanders have invested heavily in the cycling infrastructure on this route, making it safe and comfortable to cycle on this cycle highway. However, the development of the Limburg bicycle highway network is not limited to the construction and improvement of cycling infrastructure. Cycling highways must also be legible to increase the comfort and safety of the user. That is why the province of Limburg has equipped the entire F70 with signaling.

To make the bicycle highways recognizable and legible in the field, the Flemish provinces developed a route language manual, which is applied throughout Flanders, so that the legibility of the bicycle highways is identical everywhere. This makes it easier for cyclists to find their way back and plan their travel time more efficiently by taking the shortest route. In addition, the visual aspect also helps to not only promote cycling highways, but also increase the popularity of cycling by making people aware of the available routes and encouraging them to use them.

The F70 is the first bicycle highway in Limburg that is fully signposted. This bicycle highway, also known as the Demer Route, runs from Bilzen through Diepenbeek to Hasselt and is 25 kilometers long. The bicycle highway connects important points such as Bilzen center, Beverst, the university campus in Diepenbeek, Provincial House, park H, Kapermolen, Prinsbeemden and Kuringen.

Deputy Bert Lambrechts: “By installing signaling we increase the recognisability and user comfort of the bicycle highway. In this way we ensure a better driving experience and in the long term we will convince more people to leave their car at home and opt for the bicycle. Naturally, we will also continue to invest in the cycling infrastructure of the Demer Route, including the construction of the missing link Prinsbeemden. The city of Hasselt will build this with subsidies from the province and Flanders
is increasingly becoming a full-fledged bicycle highway.”
