“I have been working in nightlife for six years and, as a woman, I have experienced moments that were unpleasant, and unfortunately those moments happen often,” explains founder Triciaa. “Nightlife brings a lot of stress for women: you have to pay attention to your clothes, keep an eye on your drink to make sure nothing is put in it, even how you dance.”
The third edition of Kiki will take place on Saturday, May 11 at La Gare 27 on Damplein. There are only women behind the bar, the DJs are also women, just like the photographers. “Apart from the two security guards, who are only allowed to stand outside, there will be no men present,” says Triciaa. “It has to be a safe environment.”
Triciaa also places a lot of emphasis on supporting young talent: “I will play for half an hour myself, but after that I like to give space to young, emerging female DJs,” she says. “I hope to also give emerging artists the opportunity to perform live in the future.”
Friday is completely dedicated to the 2000s. “I was surprised that everyone stuck to the theme in the previous editions, I didn’t expect that,” says Triciaa. “This time, guests can expect oversized pants, basketball jerseys and large round earrings. La Gare 27 will also go back in time and be completely transformed into an interior from the 2000s. In addition, there will also be small activities at the event, such as a photo booth,” says Triciaa enthusiastically.
The future looks bright for Kiki: “There was a real need for a woman-only concept in Belgium,” says Triciaa. “It already exists in the Netherlands and France, but not yet here. I also have great ambitions. In the long term, I want to work with festivals so that there are safe spaces for women there too.”
