An Antwerp mayor happily sowing cannabis. It’s a strange sight, admit it. But Bart De Wever reassures: the plants do not contain any psychoactive substances and do not cause intoxication. They are intended to extract PFAS from the floor of a fire station in the harbor.

Removing PFAS from the soil with hemp plants? No, it’s not science fiction. Hemp plants remove large amounts of PFAS from the soil and store them in their leaves. After harvest, the contaminated and clean parts of the plant can be separated. The parts containing PFAS are destroyed, the rest of the plant can serve as raw material. According to researchers, it is quite a powerful natural remediation solution, especially considering that one million hemp plants fit on one hectare.

“Never thought”

The technology was previously applied in the vicinity of the 3M factory in Zwijndrecht. Millions of hemp seeds went into the ground there. Now it is the turn of the Post Lillo fire station in the port of Antwerp. With a view to the construction of a new barracks, the contaminated soil must be completely remediated.

Antwerp mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) lent a hand with the sowing this morning. “No, this is not weed, this hemp has no psychoactive effect,” he winks. “I never thought I would ever sow a hemp field. Not only does industrial hemp suck PFAS pollution from the soil, it also removes CO2 from the air and provides fibers for 100 percent sustainable building materials. This is a Flemish innovation with enormous potential.”
