“In recent years we have studied various possible routes for the cycle path,” says spokesperson Marijn Struyf of De Werkvennootschap. “The route has now been fixed. The two-kilometre-long preferred route runs along tram line 39. This way, cyclists can continue smoothly, with few interruptions over a mostly flat route. The cycle path crosses Sint-Pieters-Woluwe, Kraainem and Wezembeek-Oppem. We will connect the cycle path with the existing cycle path that passes the new Hoppinpunt at Tramterminus 44, and with the F29 Tervuren – Leuven cycle highway that is currently being constructed. The route also connects to the extensive cycling route of the Green Walk around the Brussels Capital Region.”

The project will be further technically developed in the autumn of 2024, after which the permit application will be prepared in 2025 and the works will also start in the same year. The new cycle path should be ready in 2026.

The construction of the cycle road between Wezembeek-Oppem and Brussels is part of a broader ambition of the Flemish government to fully focus on more and better cycling infrastructure and thus cycle more smoothly and quickly along and over the Ring. The Werkvennootschap offers road users a worthy alternative to the car with the aim of gradually reducing the number of cars on the Ring.
