Sint-Niklaas/Beveren

A site manager at a scaffolding construction company received an alcohol interlock and a hefty fine from the police judge in Sint-Niklaas on Monday after he crashed his car into the guardrail in Beveren. He appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

The man was found by the road police in the middle of the night in October 2022 in his heavily damaged car on the hard shoulder of the highway in Beveren. Camera images showed that half an hour earlier, a short distance from where he was found, his car had crashed into the guardrail.

The man was not injured and parked his heavily damaged car a little further on the side of the highway. “Two hours after the accident, the man took a positive alcohol test. It turned out that he still had 1.84 per mille of alcohol in his blood,” said the prosecutor, who demanded a strict sentence.

Alcolock

The man admitted that he had seriously crossed the line. “I had downed four glasses of red wine and four Duvels,” he said. “This should never have happened. In the meantime, I no longer drive the car. Colleagues come to pick me up every day and take me back home.”

The judge sentenced the man to a fine of 1,600 euros, of which 600 euros was suspended. He was also banned from driving for one month and, if he still wants to drive the car, must have an alcohol interlock installed in the car for one year.
