A Belgian woman died on Saturday afternoon after falling from a cliff in Ireland. Local media report this and it is confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It concerns a student who studied in Scotland.

The young woman is said to have visited the Cliffs of Moher, in the west of Ireland, with three friends. She is said to have lost her balance on the edge of the cliff, after which she fell down. Rescue services launched a major search and her body was soon found in the water.

According to the local newspaper Cork Beo it concerns a Belgian medical student. She was supposed to study at a university in Edinburgh, Scotland, but was on a trip to Ireland with friends.

“Gardai (Irish National Police, ed.) and emergency services carried out an operation this afternoon following reports of an incident at the Cliffs of Moher. The body of a woman in her early 20s was pulled from the water by emergency services. Her body remains at the scene,” it said on Saturday.

The Foreign Office confirms that a young Belgian woman has died in Ireland after falling from a cliff. The government service is not releasing any further information at this time.

Not first time

The Cliffs of Moher are a well-known attraction in the region. At the highest point there is a height difference of 214 meters. At the spot where the young woman died, the cliffs are about 120 meters high.

It is also not the first fatal accident in the region. In January 2019, a 26-year-old Indian fell down while trying to take a selfie. In June 2007, a Hungarian man in his twenties died while hiking the Cliffs of Moher. He was taking pictures with friends.
